    China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, STC, Egypt Telecom, Vodafone and WIOCC recently announced that they will collaborate to build 2Africa, the most comprehensive submarine cable serving the African continent and the Middle East, and will also connect cable through East Africa and other submarine cables to expand connectivity with Asia

    At present, the developer has awarded Alcatel Submarine Network a contract to build the cable to greatly enhance connectivity throughout Africa and the Middle East

    2Africa is 37,000 kilometers long and will connect Europe (east via Egypt), the Middle East (via Saudi Arabia) and 21 landing sites
    in 16 African countries.
    2Africa will provide much-needed internet capacity and reliability across much of Africa, complementing the fast-growing capacity demand in the Middle East and supporting
    further growth in 5G and fixed broadband access.

    In countries where the 2Africa cable will land, service providers will receive the capacity
    of carrier-neutral data centers or open access cable landing stations on a fair and equitable basis.
    This will support the development
    of a healthy internet ecosystem by greatly promoting accessibility for businesses and consumers.

    2Africa Cable will implement a new technology, ASN's SDM1, which will allow up to 16 pairs of fiber to be deployed instead of the 8 pairs supported by earlier technology, resulting in larger, more cost-effective capacity

    The cable will feature optical switching technology for flexible bandwidth management

    Cable burial depth has also increased by 50% compared to older systems, and cable routing will avoid locations where known seafloor interference is known, all of which help ensure the highest level of availability

    According to the plan, the system will be commissioned in April 2023, and its deliveries will exceed the combined capacity of all submarine cables serving Africa today, with key parts of the system designed for capacities up to 180Tbps
