As we all know, wearing a mask is the most effective physical means of preventing all infectious diseases, including new coronary pneumonia
.
However, around the world, especially in rural areas, there are still people who do not have a proper understanding of this protection, or even have to wear masks just because of the mandatory "mask order"
.
How can more people build this scientific awareness? Recently, in a study published in "Science", a research team from Yale University and Stanford University in the United States conducted a large-scale randomized controlled study in Bangladesh, using real-world data to determine that wearing a mask can effectively prevent Coronavirus spread
.
Between November 2020 and April 2021, the research team conducted this large-scale randomized controlled trial in about 600 villages and urban communities in Bangladesh, involving a total of 342,183 people
.
The researchers distributed masks on a household basis in villages and compared the data with urban populations where masks were not distributed
.
There were 178,322 people in the intervention group and 163,861 people in the control group
.
The researchers found that correctly wearing a mask increased from 13.
3 percent in rural areas to 42.
3 percent within two weeks of the intervention
.
There was an 11.
6% decrease in the number of suspected cases of Covid-19
.
Antibody tests also showed that places with high rates of mask wearing tended to have lower rates of infection
.
The study provides clear evidence that wearing masks during a pandemic is effective against the new coronavirus, and that if more people wear masks, they can be more effective in preventing infection, leading to improved public health, the researchers said.
