researchers at the University of Southern California and Nagoya University in Japan have teamed up to develop a new drug that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells by destroying their biological clocks.
it is well known that disrupting the rhythm of the biological clock can harm human health, as well as the biological clock of cells. If it disrupts the biological clock of cancer cells, it could theoretically damage or destroy them.
team reported in the new issue of Science Advances that they studied cancer cells in human kidney cancer and acute myeloid leukemia in mice. It turned out that a molecule called GO289 could slow the growth cycle by blocking the biological clock of cancer cells, with little effect on healthy cells.
researchers say the GO289 drug interacts with an enzyme that controls the cellular biological clock, which disrupts the function of four other proteins that are critical to cell growth and survival.
Steve Kay, director of the Mickelson Center for Convergence Biosciences at the University of Southern California, said that in some cancers, disease controls the biological clock mechanism and stimulates cancer cell growth, and that GO289 can interfere with these processes and stop cancer from developing, a drug that "could be an effective new weapon in the fight against cancer."
