A new extinct elephant fish found in Moscow

In terms of number of species, chimera fish are a small group of cartilaginous fishes

Chimeras are found in the Arctic and Pacific oceans

Thanks to the efforts of Moscow amateur paleontologist and photographer Kirill Shapovalov, new materials on chimeras were collected, and he is a co-author of this study

"Comparing the obtained materials with the dental plates of fossils and modern chimeras, it is possible to confirm the identification of a new genus and species of the elephant chimera family (Carlo hinchidae).

The uppermost sediments of the Jurassic system corresponding to the late Jurassic period (163-145 million years ago) were discovered along the Moskva River in western Moscow

"Until the end of the 20th century, this land had been established, dams and multi-storey buildings appeared, and the top outcrops of the Upper Jurassic sediments were still in several natural focal points-the so-called Volga stage (152 million to 145 million).

Through the study of the structural characteristics of the Moskovirhynchus tooth plate, it is found that its tooth system has a chimera of original and advanced features, which is obviously different from the tooth system of modern elephant chimeras
