Winter wheat flowering requires long-term induction of low temperature in the environment.
The team of Zhong Kang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher of the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discovered that the new long-chain non-coding RNA VAS derived from the wheat VRN1 gene can recruit the transcription complex RF2b-RF2a, bind it to the TaVRN1 promoter region, activate VRN1 transcription and promote flowering.
The results were published online in Molecular Plant on May 27.
VAS as a long non-coding RNA promotes flowering in winter wheat
A, transgenic verification of the effect of VAS on flowering promotion of winter wheat KN199; B, a potential model for VAS to regulate TaVRN1 transcription during vernalization.
