    December 1, 2017 is world AIDS Day, and this year's campaign focuses on how to increase impact and shift the epidemic from crisis to control. According to a new UNAIDS report, there were about 36.7 million people living with HIV worldwide at the end of 2016, and 1.8 million new infections in 2016, equivalent to about 5,000 new infections per day. HIV infection and AIDS remain important public health problems facing the world. It is estimated that $26.2 billion per year will be spent by 2020 to achieve the global goal of eliminating AIDS by 2030.
    On the occasion of this publicity day, we have selected 10 newly published open-access articles from BMC-related journals on topics such as HIV/AIDS-related infectious diseases, disease burden and economic assessment, vaccine research and development, health policy and human rights, in the hope of opening a window for researchers, scholars and practitioners from around the world to learn about the latest AIDS-related research evidence and perspectives, and to provide reference and direction for regional and global health policies.
