August 16, 2013 – ABB, a leading global power and automation technology group, announced that it has delivered the East West Interconnector to EirGrid
, the Irish transmission system operator.
The 500 megawatt (MW) transmission project, based on voltage source converter (VSC) technology, will be the highest capacity of the light HVDC lines currently in operation
.
The interconnection establishes an important connection between the Irish and UK power grids, enabling the transmission of electricity across borders, while improving grid reliability and security
of supply.
The project will also facilitate power trading between the two countries, connecting the Irish grid to the European grid
.
With the expansion of Irish wind capacity, it will be able to export surplus electricity to the UK and bring in electricity
if needed.
The 262-kilometre line connects Woodland, County Meath, Ireland, and Deeside
in northern Wales.
The cable uses extruded composite insulation to provide good strength and flexibility to withstand the harsh environment of the Irish Sea region
.
The "black start" function of lightweight HVDC transmission allows power to be quickly restored without the help of external energy sources in the event of a power failure
.
"HVDC transmission is becoming an increasingly important technology, especially to support key emerging trends such as the integration and interconnection of renewable energy
," said Kris, Global Head of ABB's Power Systems Business Unit.
ABB has always been the market leader in this field, and based on our past achievements, we will continue to pioneer new technologies
for HVDC transmission.
”
ABB pioneered HVDC transmission technology nearly 60 years ago and has acquired about 90 UHVDC projects with a total installed capacity of more than 95,000 MW, accounting for about half of
the world's installed capacity.
ABB has always been at the forefront of HVDC innovation, unique in the industry through manufacturing capabilities in the fields of power semiconductors, converters and high-voltage cables, and key components of HVDC transmission systems
.
Light HVDC is a branch of HVDC technology that helps meet the needs of long-distance transmission on land and under the
sea.
The technology is increasingly being deployed in a wide range of applications, such as renewable energy access to onshore and offshore wind farms, island power supply, power supply for offshore oil and gas platforms, urban power supply, and grid interconnection
across seas.
As a leader in this field, ABB has undertaken 13 of a total of 14 light-DC transmission grid projects in operation worldwide
, using voltage source converter technology.
