Juan Carlos Paredes, president of the Peruvian Avocado Producers Association (ProHass), said drought in the highlands of the Andes could put 30% of avocados for export at risk
    .

According to reports, because of the lack of precipitation in these areas and the lack of dams or reservoirs to guarantee the minimum requirements for irrigation, there are concerns
    about local avocado production.

Areas such as Ayacucho are already facing drought, and if avocado trees don't get enough water, the fruit size could be smaller
    than expected.
The magnitude or extent of the impact cannot be determined, but these risks exist, particularly in
    the Andes.

Growing areas along the Peruvian coast are also plagued by drought, with reservoir levels in both the north and south below historical averages
    .
Precipitation is expected in Peru in the coming weeks or January, hopefully easing the drought
    somewhat.

In recent years, the area under avocado cultivation in the high altitudes of the Andes has been increasing, with Ayacucho leading the way
    .
Cultivation in the region increased by 288% between 2018 and 2022 and now reaches 2,296 hectares
    .
Another area with strong growth in cultivation is Huancavelica, which has increased from 339 hectares in 2018 to 1,793 hectares now, an increase of 429%.
