Activated carbon physical and chemical joint modification

The combined physical and chemical method combines physical activation and chemical activation.

    (4) Molding of activated carbon

According to the different raw materials of activated carbon molding, it can be divided into two categories: one is to prepare shaped activated carbon using carbonaceous precursor as raw material; the other is to directly prepare shaped activated carbon using powdered activated carbon as raw material

①Preparation of shaped activated carbon using carbonaceous precursor as a raw material The preparation of shaped activated carbon using carbonaceous precursor as a raw material can be roughly divided into the following three situations

    a.

    Molina-Sabio et al.

②Preparation of shaped activated carbon with powdered activated carbon as raw material.

    a.

    II.

In addition to some of the organic binders listed above, other polymer aqueous solutions or alcohol solutions can also be used as binders to prepare shaped activated carbon

    b.

    Danh et al.

Yates and others use powdered activated carbon derived from coal, wood, coconut shell, and peat as raw materials, mixed with alumina or titanium dioxide , and then added silicate as a binder (additional amount is about 50%), kneaded and extruded.

In summary, the use of inorganic substances as a binder can greatly improve the mechanical strength of the formed activated carbon, but if it is added in a small amount, it cannot be formed; and if the added amount is too much, the carbon content in the formed activated carbon will decrease.
    The specific surface area decreases
    .
Therefore, this type of method is suitable for producing certain shaped activated carbons with special adsorption properties, but is not suitable for producing shaped activated carbons with high specific surface area
    .
