African telecommunications operator Liquid Telecom announced the establishment of a direct-connected fibre optic system
connecting East and West Africa following the completion of a 2,600-kilometre terrestrial fibre network throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
It is reported that the new fiber optic system will connect Muanda to Lubumbashi through Kinshasa, Kikwit, Kananga and Kolwezi, and connect the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighboring Tanzania (Dar es Salaam) and Zambia, and continues to connect to Liquid Telecom's "One Africa" broadband network, which is up to 70 years long.
000 km
.
Currently, there is no direct terrestrial fibre network
between East and West Africa.
For example, the network between Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is connected
through London.
Liquid Telecom's east-west fiber links are expected to significantly reduce latency
between African continents.
It also addresses the growing demand
from businesses worldwide for fast, reliable, high-volume, and cost-effective communications in the Global South.
Nic Rudnick, Group CEO of Liquid Telecom, said, "This transformative infrastructure lays the foundation
for digital growth by connecting DRC with Liquid Telecom's rapidly expanding pan-African fibre network, as well as the rest of the world.
Fast, reliable broadband connectivity will boost social development, drive innovation and help drive pan-African trade
