After more than 40 years of research, researchers from the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) under the Ministry of Agriculture of Chile have successfully bred a new breed of high-quality sheep with high fertility "Hidango"
    .
    This is good news
for Chile, where water scarcity is becoming increasingly prominent.

Chile's ExtraNoticias network daily reported on November 27 that Hidango is considered to be the most fertile sheep breed
    in Chile.
Researchers say that 1 Hidango ew can produce 3 lambs in 2 years, which means that 100 Hidango ewes can produce an average of 170 lambs
    per year.
As a result, fewer ewes are used for breeding, and so does the consumption of pastures and water, which is good news
for sheep producers in the drylands along the coast, and for Chile, where water scarcity is a growing problem.

According to INIA researcher Marcelo Quezada, "Hidango sheep gain weight faster, lean meat, white sheepskin is suitable for tanneries, and wool can also be used to make high-quality products
    .

Hidango sheep can produce more offspring
    in a smaller space.
South American countries such as Uruguay and Argentina have expressed interest in introducing the Hidango sheep breed
    .

José Guajardo Reyes, Chile's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, said: "To invest in innovation is to invest in the future of
agri-food in Chile and the world.
    We are proud
of the new breed of sheep that researchers from the Ministry of Agriculture have bred.
This contributes not only to national lamb producers, but also to food security, which guarantees public access to quality food
    .

INIA Country Director Iris Lobos said: "This is a milestone
    .
Today, we are witnessing the innovative power of the INIA institution to breed quality sheep breeds
    suitable for dryland geography.
