What is tomato brown wrinkle virus

Since 2019, a newly discovered plant virus-Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) has spread rapidly around the world, posing a huge threat to tomato and pepper cultivation.
At present, more than 20 countries (or regions) have issued relevant sanitary and phytosanitary measures agreement notifications (SPS notifications).

In April 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the General Administration of Customs included ToBRFV in the " List of Entry Phytosanitary Pests of the People's Republic of China ".

    Biological characteristics

    ToBRFV belongs to Virgaviridae, Tobamovirus.
The genome is a single-stranded sense RNA consisting of approximately 6390 nucleotides.
The virions are straight rod-shaped, with a width of about 18 nanometers and varying lengths.
The longer one is 500 nanometers, the shorter one is 250 nanometers, and most of them are about 300 nanometers in length.

    Harm symptoms

The main natural hosts of ToBRFV are tomatoes and peppers.
The main symptoms of the virus infecting tomato leaves are mosaic leaves, dark green protrusions, narrow leaves, necrosis when leaf veins are severely yellowed, and the number of flowers and fruits decreases.
Yellow or brown patches appear on the fruit, the fruit becomes smaller, wrinkles appear, and severely leads to necrosis of the fruit stem.
Symptoms of pepper are slow plant growth, wrinkled and yellow mottled leaves, and deformed fruits.

      Propagation mode

The virus can spread over long distances through seeds.
In the field or greenhouse, it can be spread by insects (Bombus terrestris), sap rubbing, transplanting, pruning, tethering, spraying, harvesting and other agricultural operations, and it can also be spread by pollination.

Tomatoes and peppers are important agricultural products in our country.
The customs pays close attention to the dynamics of global animal and plant epidemics, strengthens port inspection capabilities, strengthens import and export seed supervision, and resolutely safeguards national biosecurity.
