Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder associated with increased risk and increased mortality from fractures, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and cancer

The need for parathyroidectomy (PTX) in patients with mild PHPT with mild hypercalcemia and no known disease remains controversial

This study was a prospective randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of parathyroidectomy on mortality (primary endpoint) and important disease morbidity (secondary endpoint) in patients with mild PHPT

A total of 191 patients with mild PHPT who visited our clinic from 1998 to 2005 were included and randomly divided into two groups: 95 in the PTX group and 96 in the observation group (OBS)

191 PTX group 95 bits, Observation group (OBS) 96 bits

Within 10 years of randomization, 15 patients died (8 in the PTX group and 7 in the observation group)

Parathyroidectomy does not appear to reduce morbidity or mortality in mild PHPT Parathyroidectomy does not appear to reduce morbidity or mortality in mild PHPT
