    Argentina Revises Standard for Edible Salt in Codex Alimentarius

    On March 4, 2022, the Secretariat of Sanitary Quality of Argentina and the Secretariat of Regional Development issued Joint Resolution No.
    32/2021 to amend the Codex Alimentarius Standard for edible salt .
    The main contents are as follows: (1) Edible salt is mainly composed of sodium chloride .
    Can come from natural rock salt, brine or sea water, salt flats, evaporative salt; (2) Food grade edible salt must be washed, centrifuged and dried above 80°C during its formulation to ensure no physical, chemical and biological contaminants ; If the production method is vacuum or vacuum evaporation, there is no need to wash the salt; food-grade salt must be in the form of white, odorless, water-soluble crystals with a distinct salty taste; Criteria: moisture, impurities, contaminants (copper, arsenic) , cadmium, mercury, nitrate, nitrite) content requirements; (3) edible salt particle size requirements; (4) iodized salt requirements .
    Source of iodine: potassium iodate, potassium iodide; (5) content requirements of edible salt anti-caking agent; (6) label requirements .
    Food grade salt for industrial use must include "Food Grade Salt - Industrial Salt" on its label .
    The resolution will take effect the day after it is published in the Official Gazette .
