A new study found that artificial intelligence (AI) can help doctors interpret X-rays after injuries or suspected fractures

"Our artificial intelligence algorithm can quickly and automatically detect fracture-positive X-rays, and flag these studies in the system so that radiologists can prioritize reading fracture-positive X-rays

Fracture interpretation errors accounted for 24% of harmful diagnostic errors seen in the emergency department

Artificial intelligence algorithms (AI BoneView) are trained under a large number of X-rays from multiple institutions to detect fractures of the limbs, pelvis, trunk, lumbar vertebrae and ribs

Various readers including radiologists, orthopedics doctors, emergency doctors and assistant doctors, rheumatologists and family doctors are used to simulate real life scenarios.

Guermazi believes that artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool to help radiologists and other doctors improve diagnostic performance and efficiency, while potentially improving the experience of patients in hospitals or clinics

These findings were published in the online edition of the journal Radiology

The funding for this study was provided by GLEAMER
