Australia has deployed a new underwater technology in the Torres Strait to combat illegal fishing abroad, the Australian Fisheries Authority (AFMA) said on November 23.
Maritime Boundary Command (MBC) is an Australian Border Force (ABF) agency that develops the technology in partnership with the Federal Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), which develops new hydro hearing devices.
hydro-listening devices have the ability to detect and record the sound of ships, distinguish between different types of ship activities, and a total of five hydro-hearing devices are currently placed on the seabed at strategic locations.
MPC Admiral and Commander Lee Goddard said the technology was vital to protecting Australian waters, particularly when it comes to illegal fishing abroad.
listener is "an underwater microphone that can be used to monitor vessel navigation and movements in real time to assist in detecting the movements of vessels involved in illegal fishing and other illegal activities."
15 cm long, connected to a larger mooring device, sank underwater, keeping it completely hidden.
CSIRO is combining artificial intelligence with low-cost hardware to monitor offshore activity in real time.
AFMA's general manager of operations, Peter Venslovas, said, "MBC and AFMA's fisheries monitoring in the Torres Strait is an effective and well-developed partnership, and innovative new tools and technologies are critical to strengthening our presence and assisting in the detection of illegal fishing activities.
