    Bangladesh PM proposes setting up international seed bank to avoid food crisis

    According to Bangladesh's "Daily Sun" report on March 14, when Qu Dongyu, director-general of the Food and Agriculture Organization Prime Minister Hasina proposed the establishment of an international seed bank to avoid future food crises .
    The Prime Minister also suggested that the Director-General set up a comprehensive fund for digitalization and innovation projects, to which Meng is willing to contribute .
    She recalled her participation in the World Food Summit in November 1996 .
    At the time, she had just formed a government and Meng was suffering from severe food shortages .
    Thanks to the tireless efforts of her government, after just two years, Meng has achieved self-sufficiency in food production .
    She reiterated that achieving food security is a top priority as Meng is facing various challenges with a large population and scarcity of arable land .
    She said Meng scientists and researchers have done a good job developing different varieties of crops that are resistant to salt, drought and waterlogging .
    She has been working hard to transform Meng into a country free from hunger and poverty, where people can have a better life .
    She stressed the need to develop food storage capacity and food processing technology to deal with any possible disaster, such as Covid-19 .
    She recommended that the Director General address different issues in a more inclusive and sustainable way .
    Qu Dongyu expressed satisfaction with the successful holding of the 36th FAO Asia and the Pacific Regional Conference (APRC) in Dhaka, praised Prime Minister Hasina for her foresight in achieving food security, and reiterated the FAO's commitment to the development of Bangladesh's agricultural sector.
