Unlike white fat, which stores calories, brown fat can consume energy, which scientists believe may be the key to treating obesity, but it's not clear whether people with enough brown fat are really healthier.
recently, a new study provided strong evidence that scientists studied more than 52,000 participants and found that people who detected brown fat were less likely to develop heart and metabolic diseases than their peers.
study, the largest of its kind to date, not only confirms the health benefits of brown fat as previously proposed, but also expands.
the first time that the link between brown fat and reducing the risk of certain diseases has been revealed," said Paul Cohen, M.D., assistant professor and senior attending physician at Rockefeller University Hospital in Los Fey.
findings give us more confidence in the potential therapeutic effects of brown fat.
examined 130,000 PET scans in more than 52,000 patients and found brown fat in nearly 10 percent of patients.
but Cohen points out that this figure may be underestimated because patients have been told to avoid cold exposure, exercise and caffeine, which are thought to increase the activity of brown fat.
PET scans showed that people on the left had large amounts of brown fat around their necks and cervical vertebrae, and those on the right did not find brown fat.
, for example, 4.6 percent of people who detected brown fat had type 2 diabetes, compared with 9.5 percent of those who did not.
, 18.9 percent of people who detected brown fat had abnormal cholesterol, while 22.2 percent of people without brown fat.
, the study also showed a link between high blood pressure, congstive heart failure and coronary artery disease, which have not been observed in previous studies.
finding is that brown fat can reduce the negative health effects of obesity.
generally, obese people increase the risk of heart disease, but the researchers found that among obese people who detected brown fat, the prevalence of these diseases was similar to that of non-obese people.
a. Forest map shows a link between brown fat status and heart metabolic disease, and T2DM is adjusted.
dots and straight lines represent the advantage ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) respectively.
b. forest map shows a link between brown fat status and heart metabolic disease, and additional adjustments are made to the scanning position.
the team plans to further study the biological properties of brown fat, including looking for genetic variants to explain why some people have more brown fat than others, which could help develop drugs that activate brown fat to treat obesity and related diseases.
"Everyone has a question, 'What am I supposed to do to get more brown fat?' Cohen said, "This question is not yet answered, but in the next few years, this will be a very interesting area to explore."
