The prototype has a unique combination of performance: lightweight, high hardness and high strength, high temperature resistance, inherent flame retardant
for the manufacture of components with complex shapes inside cars, aircraft and trains
September 25, 2018 - After two years of in-depth research, BASF launched the world's first PESU-based particle foam prototype. The foam has a unique combination of properties: high temperature resistance, inherent flame retardant resistance, extreme lightness and high hardness and strength. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for manufacturing components with complex shapes inside cars, aircraft and trains

. These components require not only excellent mechanical performance, but also high temperature operation or strict flame retardant requirements. Foamable PESU particles are pre-foamed to particles with low densities of up to 40 to 120g/L and can be processed into molded parts with complex 3D geometry using existing technologies on the market.
BASF PESU product Ultrason® E is an ambient thermoplastic with unique temperature characteristics: its glassy transition temperature is up to 225 degrees C and the size is stable at that temperature. At the same time, its excellent mechanical and dielecution properties are extremely low temperature dependent. Foam made ® E has been approved for use in aircraft. The material has a very high limit oxygenation ignition index 38 (according to ASTM D 2863). Because of the material's inherent flame retardant properties, it can meet the requirements of commercial aircraft in terms of flammability, low heat release and low smoke density ("fire, smoke, toxicity") even without the addition of flame retardants.
particle foams are used to produce lightweight components
the new PESU particle foams, despite their low density, can still produce extremely hard and robust components that still offer excellent dimensional stability at high temperatures. Foaming molding parts made from a single material have many advantages over traditional cellular structures coated with phenolic resins: foaming parts have considerable flexibility in density and shape to meet greater design freedom; Finally, the use of a single polymer makes recycling parts easier in the future. Thanks to this lightweight thermoplastic foam for complex geometry, we are able to create new lightweight components that perform better than conventional thermoplastic components to meet trends such as automotive electricity, modernization of aircraft cabin interiors, and increasing flame retardant requirements in public transportation.
Ultrason ® is the commercial name for BASF's ultrason®E), ultrason ® S, and ultrason® P product line. This high-performance material can be used in the manufacture of lightweight components for the electronics, automotive and aerospace industries, as well as in the production of water purification membranes and related components in contact with hot water and food. Ultrason ® brand performance as an alternative to thermosostable materials, metals and ceramics.
: Unique technical expertise in foams
BASF's unique technical expertise in foams has been successfully applied to a wide range of industries. In 1951, the company patented the first-ever particle foam: A classic white foam made from foamable polystyrene (EPS), the Styropor ®. Since then, the material has set the standard for insulation and packaging applications, and in 1997 it was further developed and upgraded to a high-performance insulation ®. BASF is also a pioneer in block foams: BASF has been producing foamable polystyrene (XPS) insulation materials for the construction industry since 1964®. Since then, the company has been bringing a variety of high-performance foams to market: Basotect® is an elastic open-hole foam made from miamine resins for use in acoustic engineering, transportation and cleaning, and Neopolen® is a polypropylene foam (EPP) with high energy absorption capacity and high resilience. The latest innovation is The Infinergy ®, the world's first foaming thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU) infinergy®, and the ecovoio® EA, a certified compostable foam foam with a high bio-based component that can be used for transportation packaging and benefits the circular economy.
