The Belgian government approved draft legislation on January 22, which will finally allow the country's long-delayed auction of 5G mobile spectrum to proceed

According to the draft, the Belgian 5G spectrum auction will take place in early 2022 and is expected to generate at least 800 million euros in revenue

Previously, there were differences
between regions over how to divide auction revenues.
According to the Belgian Ministry of Telecommunications, operators will need to provide 5G coverage to 70% of the population after one year, 99.
5% after two years and 99.
8%
after six years.
On the thorny issue of radiation standards, Petra De Sutter, head of Belgium's telecommunications department, stressed that operators will have to comply with regional regulations

After the legislation is passed, the Belgian Institute of Postal and Telecommunications can start planning the technical details
of the auction.
Guillaume Boutin, chief executive of Belgian mobile operator Proximus, said the coverage targets set in the draft legislation were feasible and he hoped the deployment of 5G services would be "very rapid," even faster
than the rollout of 4G.
