Rag Udd, BHP's head of Americas operations, said at the Peruvian Mining Congress on Tuesday that the company hopes to expand its presence
in Peru by exploring new projects.

Peru is the world's second-largest copper producer, and BHP Billiton is the partial owner
of Antamina, one of Peru's largest copper mines.

Udd added that BHP Billiton will invest US$12 million in exploration over the next 10 months and is currently evaluating six potential projects
    .

Despite the fall in copper prices in recent months, Udd said he remains optimistic
about future demand for copper as it switches from fossil fuels to energy.

"It is entirely possible that Peru will seize this opportunity and start a new positive cycle," Udd said, adding that the country has maintained stable macroeconomic fundamentals
    in recent years.

    BHP is also the operator
of the world's largest copper mine, Escondida, Chile.
