Research shows Alzheimer's disease is a potential treatment target

A new study may have identified a potential treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease)

The study was led by researchers at the Healey Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the results were published in the journal Molecular Neurobiology

The research team used the brain tissues of dead patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and found abnormal forms of tau in places where tau normally does not exist

Sadri-Vakili said: "We have demonstrated for the first time that using a new small molecule to target tau protein and selectively degrade it can reverse the changes in mitochondrial shape and function induced by als, highlighting tau protein as a potential therapeutic target.
