By 2021, Jordan plans to add 2,400 MW of renewable energy capacity

Jordan's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Zawati revealed that Jordan wants to increase its renewable energy capacity by 2,400 MW
in 2021.

According to a report published on the ministry's website, renewable energy currently accounts for 11% of the country's total energy demand, up 1%
from the corresponding figure in 2014.

The minister said Jordan's renewable energy generated 1,130 megawatts in 2018 and Jordan plans to generate 20 percent of its total energy needs
from renewable sources by 2025.

In the first phase of its plan to increase renewable energy development, the ministry has so far implemented 10 solar projects in Ma'an and one solar project each in Aqaba and Irbid, with a total capacity of 204 MW
.
All 12 projects began operations
in 2016.

In the second phase, the Ministry implemented three projects in the development zone of Mafraq and one project in Safawi with a total capacity of 200 MW
.

The ministry is currently developing a 150 MW solar park in Ma'an as the third phase of the plan, which is expected to be operational
in 2020.
