International market consulting agency Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables recently said in the off-grid energy report that by 2022, off-grid solar energy will provide reliable electricity
to 740 million people.
According to the World Bank, there are currently about 1 billion people without electricity in the world, and another 2 billion people do not have access to reliable electricity
.
Between 2010 and 2017, nearly 400 million people already gained access to electricity through off-grid solar, which will provide electricity to 740 million people by 2022
.
Despite rapid growth in electrification, population growth is outpacing electrification
in many parts of the world.
At the current rate, 95 per cent of the world's people without access to electricity live in sub-Saharan Africa
.
According to Wood Mackenzie's preliminary estimates, $52 billion in annual investment is needed to provide general electricity
by 2030.
Wood Mackenzie noted that general energy access, particularly off-grid solar and solar minigrids, is experiencing rapid growth, largely thanks to strategic investments
from global oil and gas giants, European utilities and independent power producers, and clean energy OEMs.
Collaborations such as these see new business opportunities
in fast-growing emerging markets.
"As the off-grid energy access industry begins to mature, strategic investors will deeply shape the trajectory of the market and redefine the customer-centric utility business model by expanding the range of services to once again go beyond basic power connectivity," said Benjamin Attia, analyst and reporting leader at Wood Mackenzie.
