Cabo Verde Telecom and EllaLink, a Latin American-European submarine cable, announced the signing of a binding memorandum of understanding to provide Cape Verde with an undersea fiber connection
.
Cape Verde is connected by submarine fibre optic via the Latin American-European submarine cable EllaLink
The EllaLink submarine cable system will be operational
in 2020.
It is a new 4-panel fiber-to-submarine cable currently under construction to meet the flow needs
between Europe and Latin America.
When completed, the EllaLink cable will provide the only direct interconnection and other branch paths between the two continents along a 6,000-kilometer route, serving
customers in Cabo Verde and Madeira.
The new connections will enhance the diversity and resilience of Cabo Verde's telecommunications infrastructure, providing access-to-telecom capacity through direct connections to Brazil and Portugal, leading to significant growth
in internet, cloud computing and 5G services.
Jose Luis Livramento, CEO of Cabo Verde Telecom, said: "We are delighted with the opportunity to build more fibre connections and are confident that this new infrastructure will strengthen Cabo Verde's position
as a strategic communications hub with direct access to Europe and the Americas.
