"Cauliflower" anemone feeds on ants |
Scientists have long suspected that the giant plumed sea anemone (Metridium farcimen) that thrives on the Pacific coast of the United States feeds on marine zooplankton and tiny marine invertebrates
.
A new study shows that this guess is basically correct
In order to find out what sea anemones eat, the researchers collected 12 sea anemones on a wharf near the coast of Washington state and analyzed the contents of their stomachs
.
Using a method called DNA metacoding, extracting DNA from samples and matching it with species lists in online databases, they found that sea anemones feed on crab larvae, vines, and plankton
So, how do ants get into the stomach of the sea anemone? After some speculation, scientists realized that these anemones were caught during the mating season of local white-legged ants
.
For a few weeks in August, there were ants everywhere near the Washington Waterfront Pier
