January 27, 2021 // -- A study led by Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center and School of Medicine found that the widely used painkiller gabapentin can prevent harmful structural changes in the spinal cord in mice and prevent immunosuppression caused by cardiovascular changes and spinal cord injuries.
"gabapentin" is often considered an analgesic, but if gabapentin is given early after injury (before symptoms appear), it can also limit structural changes in nerve cells.
we have shown that these benefits persist even a month after Gabapentin's treatment of spinal cord injury.
believe gabapentin can be re-used as a preventive therapy to prevent autonitive neuro dysfunction in people affected by spinal cord injuries.
," said Phillip Popovich, senior author and chairman of the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University.

"This is the first time that gabapentin has been shown to prevent the development of autonational neurological disorders, rather than to address the treatment of symptoms caused by autologic neurofunctional disorders."
to stress or danger, autonomous nerve cells in the spinal cord trigger a 'fight or flight' response.
is a normal and beneficial reaction that increases blood pressure and releases hormones such as epinephrine and cortisol.
, lead author of the study, said Faith Brennan, a researcher in the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University.
, however, after a traumatic spinal cord injury, a large number of structural changes occur in the spinal cord autolognation nerve center that controls the auto-fighting or escape response, which can cause autolognation to spiral out of control.
, for example, usually harmless stimuli, such as bladder filling, can trigger a fight or escape response.
due to spinal cord injury, the reaction is uncontrolled and can cause a number of health problems, including severe hypertension, slow heart rhythm and long-term immunosuppression.
is a major problem in patients with spinal cord injury," said Popovich, a leading medical student.
can lead to serious illnesses such as heart attacks and strokes, while long-term immunosuppression can lead to serious recurrent infections, such as pneumonia.
" currently, these symptoms can only be controlled (e.g. regular intestinal/bladder urination programmes), but there is no cure.
" use of gabapentin as a preventive therapy to prevent the development of autonational neurodefunctional disorders can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with spinal cord injury, including by improving social independence, reducing caregiver dependence, reducing susceptibility to infection and increasing life expectancy.
has been approved by the FDA and has been widely used to treat nerve pain caused by spinal cord injury.
if the patient is treated early after the injury, gabapentin can prevent the inevitable harmful structural changes of most severe spinal cord injuries.
