function, morphology and genetic characteristics are the basic properties of neurons, from the genetic characteristics of neurons to their corresponding functional phenotypes and morphological phenotypes, there is a huge gap, and the identification of functional phenotypes and morphological phenotypes corresponding to the genotypes of neurons is also a major problem, but it is crucial
to understand the neural basis of brain work.

This study provides morphological and functional annotations
    for 19 Novel transcriptome types.

For example, for a cell whose transcriptome belongs to a cell named C10_Novel (Figure 3A), the findings are all present with ON responses and morphologies that all belong to the 7i/7o type
    .

    These cells are characterized by
a large dendritic area, a single layering of dendrites in the inner plexus layer, and coincidence with the branches of starburst-free long-process cells located in the GCL layer.

For example, the transcriptome belongs to a cell named C39_Novel (Figure 3B), which belongs morphologically to type 5si, has the characteristics of small dendritic area but high complexity and more branching points, and its dendrites are widely distributed in the middle of the inner plexus layer, suggesting that such cells may be involved in the processing of high-resolution images; In terms of function, this part of the cells exhibits the color selectivity characteristics
of ON-OFF under blue light and ON under green light.

These characteristics of C39_Novel suggest that they may be involved in high-resolution visual formation
    .

In the case of cells whose transcriptome belongs to C34_Novel (Figure 3C), although morphologically dendrites are also distributed near the middle layer of the inner plexus, they are functionally present as an ON response
    .

In summary, the study optimizes and improves the Patch-seq technology so that transcriptome, morphology and functional information can be obtained simultaneously from a single retinal ganglion cell (RGCs), drawing a multimodal map of RGCs, and resolving the nuances of different subtypes of RGCs from multiple dimensions of molecules, functions and morphology, and the establishment of the atlas contributes to the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms processed by early visual information processing.
