On December 11th Cermaq, British Columbia, Canada, said tests of the company's new semi-closed control system were under way and that it had successfully stored fish eggs.
unique to the system is that it uses a patented material to form a barrier around the fence designed to limit interaction with wild salmon and facilitate the growth of farmed salmon.
the system is the first in Canada, although norwegian company Cermaq has successfully conducted tests in Norwegian waters.
, general manager of Cermaq Canada, said the system "essentially eliminates the risk of lice transferring from wild salmon to farmed salmon."
, farmed salmon grow faster and better in the system.
in Canada, the pilot project will need to confirm the feasibility of the system in Canadian waters, analyse the performance of salmon and match it to farmed salmon from the traditional net-box system, and the trial will continue until the summer of 2022.
