According to Pamela Gidi, head of Chile's telecommunications department (Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones, Subtel), Chile is willing to cooperate with other countries to build a 24,000-kilometer submarine cable system
connecting South American countries and China.
Previously, French Polynesia also expressed strong interest
in joining the submarine cable system.
In June 2017, Subtel revealed that a technical feasibility study conducted by Chinese supplier Huawei had been completed

The study provides three feasible pathways, namely connecting Shanghai, China and Valparaíso, Chile via Juan Fernandez, Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia; connecting Shanghai, China with Valparaíso, Chile, via Juan Fernández, Easter Island and Tahiti (French Polynesia); It connects Punta Arenas, Chile and Shanghai
in China via Auckland, New Zealand.
According to reports, the Pan Pacific submarine cable system was originally proposed in February 2016 by Pedro Huichaf, then Chile's telecommunications minister, during a visit to China

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet again proposed the system
during a visit to China in May 2017.
