Thanks to the strong demand in the Chinese market, the output and planting area of Chilean cherries will refresh the historical records achieved in the previous season each season, and the 2021/22 season (2021/11-2022/10) is no exception
    .

According to the latest report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Chilean cherry planting area in the 2021/22 season will increase by 11.
    5% year-on-year to 44,000 hectares (660,000 acres)
    .
However, affected by the decline in yield per hectare, the yield in the 2021/22 season will only increase by 3% year-on-year to approximately 395,000 tons
    .
The continuous risk of drought and frost has forced cherry growers to adjust their planting strategies, such as pruning and thinning the fruit, to ensure the size and quality of the fruit
    .
In this way, there will be all sacrifices in terms of output
    .

In the 2020/21 season (2020/11-2021/10), the output of Chilean cherries reached 384,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 50.
    6%.
The soaring output has put a lot of pressure on harvesting, processing, and packaging
    .
Although Chile's agricultural production has achieved a high degree of automation, product packaging still requires a lot of manual labor
    .
In the 2020/21 season, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, some orchards are under-staffed, which also leads to higher production costs
    .
At the same time, due to insufficient manpower for pruning, fruit thinning, packaging and other operations, the quality of some products has declined
    .
In the 2021/22 season, challenges in this area will still exist
    .

The main cherry varieties grown in Chile include Santina, Regina and Lapins
    .
Santina is an early-maturing variety, harvested in mid-November each year
    .
As the vanguard to reach the market, the price of this variety is often higher
    .
Regina is a mid-term variety, known for its firmness and durability to storage and transportation
    .
The characteristic of Lapins is that the output has always been relatively stable
    .
At present, Chilean growers are still improving and cultivating varieties that are less dependent on climatic conditions, such as varieties that do not require a long low temperature period in winter, or have strong tolerance to disasters such as heavy rains and frosts
    .

The report predicts that the export volume of Chilean cherries in the 2021/22 season will increase slightly by 3% from the previous season, to about 364,000 tons
    .
In the 2020/21 season, the export volume and export value of Chilean cherries reached 353,000 tons and 1.
    87 billion U.
    S.
dollars, respectively, an increase of 54.
    3% and 57.
    8% year-on-year
    .
In terms of export markets, China is the largest overseas destination that does my part
    .
In the 2020/21 season, exports to China reached 322,000 tons, accounting for 91% of Chilean cherry exports
    .
As the second largest export market, the United States accounts for only 2%
    .

In late January this year, Chinese social media broke the news that a certain batch of Chilean cherries from Wuxi tested positive
    .
Although it was not released by official channels, the news spread rapidly on the Internet within a short period of time
    .
Affected by this, the export of Chilean cherries slowed down, and the price immediately plunged as high as 59%
    .
Later, a third-party testing agency found no evidence that Chilean cherry packages were infected with the new coronavirus
    .
This episode did not affect the demand of the Chinese market in the end
    .
It is reported that a major focus of the new season in Chile is to ensure that all cherries shipped to the Chinese market can maintain high quality, thereby maintaining the reputation of the product and obtaining a higher premium
