On September 19, at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, China announced the development of
a new generation of nuclear power technology, the "high-temperature gas-cooled reactor".
In this regard, some public opinion pointed out that China has begun to catch up with South Korea
in some nuclear power technology fields.
With the South Korean government's announcement of nuclear denuclearization, it is inevitable to raise fears that South Korea will lose out to China
in a substantial competition.
According to Korean media reports, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors use helium as a cooling material to replace the water
used in current nuclear reactors.
China Atomic Energy Science and Technology Corporation, a partnership between China National Nuclear Industry Construction Group and Tsinghua University, said it had finally built a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor
in Shandong province after five years of development.
It is planned to complete the demonstration work and put it into commercial use
by April next year.
According to the report, in the international nuclear power community, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors are recognized as a new generation of nuclear reactors
.
Nuclear power plants currently operating around the world use the heat generated during nuclear fission to heat water into steam, which is used to drive generator sets
.
However, if helium is used instead of water for heating, the temperature can quickly reach the boiling point, that is, the thermal efficiency is greatly improved
.
China plans to operate 110 nuclear power plants in the country by 2030, becoming the world's largest nuclear power country
.
Since China exported its self-developed nuclear power plants to Pakistan for the first time in 2013, it has started or built 10 nuclear power plants
in Argentina, Romania and other places.
After exporting four South Korean-type nuclear power plants to the United Arab Emirates in 2009, South Korea has achieved zero
nuclear power plant orders for eight consecutive years.
According to experts, China has achieved the rise
of the world nuclear power market through concentrated investment.
According to the nuclear power community, China has invested more than a thousand high-level personnel in the research
of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
South Korea, on the other hand, has fewer than 50 people, and even the budget is decreasing
year by year.
