On October 5, 2021, the research team of Bu Pengcheng from the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the team of Professor Hu Liangding from the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital published a titled "Cytoplasmic NEAT1 Suppresses AML Stem Cell Self-Renewal" in the " Advanced Science " magazine.

AML is caused by a series of chromosomal translocations and gene mutations in myeloid precursor cells.

LncRNA NEAT1 is an important component of the side spots in the subcellular structure of the nucleus.

The researchers first analyzed the TCGA and GEO databases and unexpectedly found that the expression of NEAT1 in AML cells was significantly lower than in normal blood cells, and was positively correlated with the relapse period of AML patients, that is, the lower the NEAT1 expression, the shorter the relapse period in patients

The study found that the tumor-promoting gene NEAT1 in solid tumors has a tumor suppressor function in AML, revealing a new mechanism of NEAT1_1 nuclear production, and providing a theoretical basis for AML targeted therapy

Researcher Bu Pengcheng from the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Hu Liangding from the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital are the corresponding authors of this article.

Figure: NEAT1 plays a role in promoting cancer and suppressing cancer through different mechanisms in solid tumors and AML.
