Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Center was informed that the center's plant diversity and conservation research team in Xinping, Yunnan found a new species of ginger plant: purple lip ginger. The findings were published in the international academic journal Annales Botanici Fennici.

There are about 54 species recorded in China, which is the main distribution center of ginger plants. 2018, researchers collected the ginger plant during a plant survey in Xinping, Yunnan Province. Through detailed specimen pairing, literature review, and anatomical examination of similar species. It was eventually identified as a new species of ginger plant, named purple lip ginger because of its fuchsia lip flaps.
