In addition to chloroplasts, there are also a class of similar organelles in plants, collectively called plastids, which are widely present in different plant organs and tissues

On May 18, 2021, the international academic journal Nature Plants published an online publication titled "The CHLORAD pathway controls chromoplast development" by the Paul Jarvis research group of the Department of Plant Science of the University of Oxford and the Ling Qihua research group of the State Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics.

The research team discovered a new chloroplast protein degradation pathway CHLORAD, which uses the ubiquitin-proteasome system to selectively degrade chloroplast outer envelope proteins, including the outer membrane TOC complex component responsible for chloroplast protein transport

The study found that down-regulation of SP1 or its homologous gene SPL2 in tomato leads to delayed fruit ripening, while overexpression of SP1 leads to early fruit ripening
