Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a devastating disease with high mortality or neurological sequelae

Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a devastating disease with high mortality or neurological sequelae

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the current standard of care for the treatment of tuberculosis is the same as for tuberculosis, a two-month intensive phase of isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol followed by isoniazid and rifampicin at the same dose as in tuberculosis

Based on emerging evidence from adult TBM trials that high-dose rifampicin provides benefit and that fluoroquinolones may improve outcomes, we developed a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) model to select children for rifampicin use Dosage of levofloxacin is moderate

Methods: TBM-KILDS (NCT02958709) was a phase II open-label randomized trial in children with TBM in India and Malawi

RESULTS: Of the 2487 prescreened children, 79 were screened and 37 were enrolled

Table 1 compares the neurocognitive outcomes of the three groups, assessed longitudinally during study participation

Conclusions: In a trial of TBM in children, functional outcomes were generally favorable
