As the global population is aging at an unprecedented rate, postoperative neurocognitive disorders are becoming more and more common.

This randomized double-blind controlled trial included 120 elderly patients who were scheduled to undergo elective orthopedic or colorectal surgery.

The results of the study showed that the incidence of postoperative cognitive impairment in the probiotic group was significantly lower than that in the control group (3 out of 59 patients in the probiotic group [5.

This trial confirmed that oral probiotics during the perioperative period can prevent postoperative cognitive impairment in elderly patients after non-cardiac surgery.
