Pramod Agrawal, chairman of Coal India, recently said that India's coal production will exceed 650 million tonnes
in fiscal year 2020-21.
Coal India produced 405 million tonnes of coal in India for the third fiscal quarter ended 31 December 2020, of which Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) from Orissa contributed 101.

Coal India said it was necessary to produce more coal
as demand for dry fuels was expected to increase post-Covid-19 pandemic.
Coal India is committed to meeting the country's energy needs and is therefore very focused on increasing production

"The country needs to produce more and more coal," said Agrawal, stressing the growing demand for coal to meet energy demand to restore post-Covid-19 industrial demand
.
The sudden drop in coal demand due to the pandemic forced subsidiaries to slow down production and focus on other related efforts, such as clearing topsoil and strengthening coal transportation infrastructure
.
Agrawal said: "MCL has performed very well so far, but there are still more challenges
.
"Coal India is commencing the second phase of the Bhubaneswari Coal Processing Plant (CHP) as part of
MCL's First Mile Connectivity (FMC) project.
The estimated cost of the Bhuabneswari CHP Phase II project is Rs 247 crore with a coal processing capacity of 15 million tonnes per annum
.
