With governments banning catering companies from providing plastic straws, scholars and researchers from all walks of life have begun to develop alternatives to plastics as an alternative to beverage straws

    .

Researchers and students from Universiti Malaya, Pahang (University of Malaysia) have recently successfully demonstrated that the aquatic plant Lepironia articulata can be used as a drinking straw

    .

Suyati, a lecturer in the Department of Science and Civil Engineering at Penma University, pointed out that the innovative ideas for plants were jointly developed by 10 diploma and bachelor students

    .

She said the study had been started in stages since 2012 and was officially completed in October last year

    .

"It's very encouraging when we show that rushes are suitable and safe to use and are environmentally friendly

    .

"It's only suitable for one-time use anyway, but it only takes one to two weeks for it to decay naturally

    .

She pointed out that before the plant straws were made, they went through 8 steps and finally made 4 sizes of beverage straws

    .

Sujati said they will conduct more research in response to China's goal of becoming a major exporter of environmentally friendly products

    .

Nurufala, the team leader in charge of the research project, pointed out that the size of the straw straws is close to that of plastic straws, that is, 18 to 20 cm in length and 2 to 5 mm in diameter
    .

She said that rushes were previously only used in handicrafts, including straw mats, and as a traditional herbal remedy for diseases such as diabetes
    .

Earlier, the Kelantan Gembu Agricultural Development Agency (KADA) also successfully developed the use of citronella (serai) as a beverage straw
