The Colombian Federation of Animal Husbandry (Fedegan) held a sit-in outside the Sociedad Portuaria de Cartagena on January 3 to protest the Colombian government's importation of milk powder from the United States .

According to the Colombian newspaper Observatory, the chairman of Fedegan, José Félix Lafaurie, who initiated the protest, said the Colombian dairy industry does not support the country’s 320,000 households engaged in dairy farming.
For the milk produced by farmers, they are more inclined to import dairy products from other countries, which is not conducive to the development of domestic animal husbandry
    .

Protesters have refuted claims that "Colombia's milk production is insufficient
    .
" According to Felix, Colombia is the tenth largest milk producer in the world and the tenth largest owner of livestock
    .
    Colombia produces 7.
4 billion liters of milk every year, of which only 3.
    1 billion liters are processed
    .
Last year, however, Colombia imported milk products equivalent to 800 million liters of milk
    .
Unprocessed milk is sold illegally at prices that do not even cover the cost of production
    .

In addition, protesters demanded that the government scrap the free trade agreement with the United States on the grounds that "it is a one-way trade agreement, the United States exports milk and meat to Colombia, but Colombia cannot export anything to the United States because the market in the United States is simply not right.
Colombia is open and the free trade agreement is a complete deception
    .
    "

Colombian senator and presidential candidate Jorge Robledo expressed support for the protest, while also stating that "this terrible free trade agreement must be renegotiated
