Turkey's Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the construction of a fourth reactor
at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in the country's southeastern province of Mersin.
The unit will reportedly be built by Akkuyu Nuclear, a subsidiary of Russia's Rosatom, and will be the final phase
of the $20 billion project.
Rosatom ranks third in the world for nuclear power generation and has the world's largest portfolio
of foreign construction projects.
Russia is responsible for the financing, design, construction, maintenance and operation of the plant and will be decommissioned at the end of its 60-year useful life
.
On the basis of the limited construction permit issued in June, preparatory work, including engineering surveys and excavations of more than 650 square meters, has been carried out
.
"By the end of this year," Rosatom said, "construction of concrete foundations
for the foundation slabs of reactor and turbine buildings is expected to begin.

Rosatom said that with the construction of Unit 4, Akkuyu will be the world's largest nuclear construction site, with four large reactors under construction

The agreement to build a nuclear power plant in Akuyu, signed in May 2010, envisages four VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 4.
8GW, equivalent to about
10% of Turkey's average demand.
The approval process requires 120 licenses and permits
issued by Turkish government agencies.
These include environmental impact assessments, power generation permits and some generator set construction permits
