Cold winds off the Arctic coast near Murmansk will soon have a new effect, and the Kolskaya wind farm here will be the largest in Russia, providing 750 gigawatts of electricity
per year.
The joint Russian-Italian project will place 57 wind turbines along the coast of the Barents Sea, about 80 kilometers from Murmansk, which can avoid emitting about 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas,
into the atmosphere.
The Kolskaya wind farm will open in 2020 and will be built
by Enel Italy and its subsidiary Enel Green Power.
"As construction of this facility begins, we are confirming our commitment to Russia's transition to a low-carbon economy," said
Enel's head of Europe's European and Euro-Mediterranean affairs at a recent ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the wind farm.
Although Moscow accepted the emissions reduction targets set out in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, the new windmill facility represents a long-term effort
by the Murmansk regional government to showcase green energy projects.
The Russian government has proposed a strategy that by 2020, about 4.
5% of the country's energy will be produced
by renewable sources.
However, industry insiders believe that Russia is far behind the renewable energy targets
outlined in the energy strategy.
Between 2025 and 2035, Russia intends to spend only about $6 billion on renewable energy projects, accounting for only 5 GW of electricity generation
