Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved a license to the Ketchikan Utility (KPU) for the construction, landing and operation of a private submarine fiber optic cable to connect a new cable at Ketchikan (Alaska) to an existing landing station
in Prince Rupert (British Columbia, Canada).

The submarine cable system, known as KetchCan1, is about 167 km long and can contain up to 48 fibers, each with a design capacity of 2.

According to the plan, KPU will issue a tender and procurement plan for submarine cable deployment and award the contract in November/December 2019, with commercial operations
scheduled to commence in September 2020.
KPU will own, control and operate all parts of
this cable system.
