On 4 January 2020, the Government of Costa Rica announced that it would regulate chemical pesticides used in pineapple plantations and other crops in order to reduce soil and water pollution.
Costa Rica's National newspaper reported on 4 January that the Costa Rican Association for the Management of Water and Sanitation Systems (Asadas) had reported to the Costa Rican Constitutional Court (Sala IV) in 2019 that the Government had not managed the pesticides used in pineapple cultivation, which in turn had led to soil and water contamination.
The Fourth Court finally ruled on 4 January 2020 that the relevant public bodies should initiate a plan to clean up pesticide contamination from pineapple cultivation and be obliged to report the hygienic disposal process for residual pesticides.
In response to the judge, the Government of Costa Rica revealed that, in order to protect the environmental safety of soil and water sources, the Government would regulate the chemical pesticides used in the cultivation of pineapples and other crops, including parathion, pyridoxine, aphids, etc.
the same time, the Costa Rican government, through the Ministry of Health (Minsa), announced that in the first half of 2021 in the pineapple cultivation process will be banned from the use of insects such as pyridrophea, radon, tetium and other pesticides.
Ministry of Health also explained to the judge other measures, such as strengthening verification, restoring environmental protection zones and issued technical regulations on the use of agrochemicals.
