Telefonica, a Spanish telecommunications company, has offered to connect Cuba with its international submarine cable system
.
The operator reportedly proposed to connect Cuba to the submarine cable network
currently being deployed in the Caribbean via a branch path.
Cuba is currently serviced by the 1,860-kilometer Alba-1 submarine cable system connecting Cuba with Venezuela and Jamaica, which was built by Alcatel-Lucent and deployed
in August 2012.
This was made during the official visit of Spanish President Pedro Sánchez to Cuba
.
Telefónica has offered to connect the country to its submarine cable network currently deployed in the Caribbean via feeder lines as part of
its Latin American infrastructure.
Local portal CiberCuba then reported that Trinidad Jimenez, former Spanish foreign minister and current head of global public affairs strategy at Telefónica, met with Cuban officials earlier this year to assess its possible
launch of submarine cable deployments in Cuba.
In 2017, Google became the first foreign company
to provide internet services in Cuba after opening a data server in Cuba.
The company reached an agreement with Etecsa in 2016 to give internet users in Cuba faster access to its content
