Supporters of the Danish project hope to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy, according to the ICIS website on December 9th, as plans for the world's first green commercial-scale ammonia plant in Denmark were announced on Wednesday.
project was developed by Skovgaard Invest and supported by Vestas, a sustainable energy solutions provider, and Haldor Topsoe, a leading designer of catalysts, technologies and services for the chemical and refining industries.
plant in western Germany is scheduled to start production in 2022 and will produce more than 5,000 tons of green ammonia per year from renewable sources for agricultural and industrial applications.
the 10-megawatt plant will generate 8,200 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, and the two supporters are investing in the project and applying for a public mutual fund.
two companies described the plant as a "dynamic, scalable and cost-optimized solution" and noted that existing Vestas wind turbines and new 50-megawatt solar panels would power an electrolyte cell unit that would produce hydrogen for ammonia, a process known as "Power-to-X."
Gr?n Knudsen, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Haldor Topsoe, said: "This project proves to the world that we can produce very clean fuels from industrial-scale renewable energy as soon as 2022.
" "We have mastered the technology needed to begin the transition to renewable fuels and reduce carbon emissions, and with the innovation of this project, we have pushed for restrictions on the use of volatile renewable energy sources in the direct synthesis of clean fuels."
" added J?rgen Skovgaard of Skovgaard Invest: "We expect this to be the first of several power plants in western Jedland, where both existing and new on-land renewable energy projects can provide cheap renewable energy for Power-to-X applications.
"We are expected to develop more and larger Power-to-X projects in the region, and we see the export potential of many potential contractors, such as agriculture, marine industry and nearby industrial ports."
