Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes , cardiovascular disease, malignancy and mortality

We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials over 3 months comparing subjects with a BMI >30 kg/m2 on a low-carbohydrate diet with controls, by conducting extensive searches of the online databases MedLine and Embase.

As only four trials reported data on renal function and psychological parameters, renal safety and effects on well-being could not be assessed

CONCLUSIONS: Low-carbohydrate diets were associated with greater short-term weight loss and long-term favorable effects on cardiovascular risk factors compared with non-carbohydrate-restricted diets
