Purpose: The long-term effect of metformin on the increased risk of severe respiratory infections in patients with type 2 diabetes remains unclear
Methods: Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 22,638 patients with type 2 diabetes registered in the Hong Kong Diabetes Registry from 2001 to 2018 and followed up until December 31, 2019
- 1 - 2
Results: The overlap-weighted analysis showed that compared with those using other GLDs, the risk of first hospitalization for pneumonia in metformin patients was 0.
There is also a negative correlation between the exposure time of metformin ( the proportion of the duration of metformin prescription used in the total follow-up time ) and the pneumonia event.
The graph shows the relationship between hospitalizations for pneumonia during metformin observation (a) and related pneumonia deaths (b), as well as the relationship between the average daily dose of metformin in the overlapping weighted cohort and the risk of first pneumonia hospitalization (c)

Pneumonia-related death was defined as death from any cause ≤ 30 days after the first pneumonia hospitalization
Long-term use of metformin is associated with reduced risk of pneumonia and pneumonia-related deaths
