Original title: Drinking tea can reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease
Recently, a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology by Gu Dongfeng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the Gu Dongfeng Team of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, showed that regular tea consumption can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause deaths, especially for people who have long adhered to the habit of drinking tea, male tea drinkers, green tea drinkers, the health benefits are more significant.
the study, conducted using data from the China-PAR project, included 100,902 people over the age of 18 after excluding people with baseline heart disease, stroke or tumor, or no tea-drinking information. Based on tea drinking habits, they divided the subjects into regular tea drinkers (at least 3 times a week) and tea-free drinkers (never tea or less than 3 times a week). About 50% of men and 20% of women in the China-PAR population regularly drink tea, about half of tea drinkers are used to drinking green tea, about 8% are used to drinking black tea, the rest choose flower tea and other types.
followed the health outcomes of the study subjects for up to 17 years, and found that the risk of cardiovascular disease, death and total death decreased by about 20%, 22% and 15%, respectively, compared with those who did not drink tea. In other words, for 50-year-olds, regular tea drinkers had a 1.41-year delay in cardiovascular disease and a 1.26-year longer life span. The study further used 14,081 study subjects after 8.2 years of two tea drinking habits survey information, analysis found that compared with those who never drink tea, adhere to the long-term tea drinkers cardiovascular disease incidence, cardiovascular disease death and total cause of death risk decreased more significantly, the proportion of 39%, 56% and 29%.
in the subtype of cardiovascular disease, the study found that tea drinking habits on stroke and coronary heart disease incidence and stroke death have a better protective effect. Analysis based on tea type showed that the risk of cardiovascular disease and total cause of death decreased significantly in people who used to drink green tea, but no significant protective effect was found from regular drinking of black tea. In addition, the study found that the protective effects of tea drinking were more pronounced in men, possibly because of the high proportion of men drinking tea and the significantly higher incidence of cardiovascular disease than in women, making it easier to observe the health effects of tea drinking among men.
that the health benefits of drinking tea may be linked to the polyphenols they are rich in. Tea polyphenols are the main biologically active substances in tea, with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, improve blood pressure, blood lipids and other effects. Among all kinds of tea, green tea has the highest polyphenol content. In the fermentation process, tea polyphenols will be oxidized, loss of activity, resulting in a reduction in the content of tea polyphenols in black tea. In addition, tea polyphenols are metabolized faster in the body and cannot be stored for long periods of time, so long-term tea drinking habits are needed to benefit from them.
At present, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of the global burden of disease, although its morbidity and mortality rate has decreased in developed countries in recent years, but it is still on the rise in China, with urbanization, population aging, lifestyle changes, China's future facing the severe challenges of cardiovascular disease burden. Finding simple preventive measures for cardiovascular disease is critical to achieving the Healthy China goal. The results of this study suggest that tea, as a popular drink in China, can effectively reduce the total risk of cardiovascular disease and death, and provide direct scientific evidence for the formulation of lifestyle strategies for cardiovascular disease prevention and the choice of healthy drinks.
It is understood that Gu Dongfeng led the China-PAR project is in China's 15 provinces and cities in urban and rural residents, is China's largest cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health research queue, a total of 127,000 people, research baseline and follow-up survey adopted a unified research program and strict quality control. Currently, the project is conducting the latest round of follow-up visits. The China-PAR project has previously published a number of research results on the impact of cardiovascular disease risk assessment, lifestyle and environmental factors on Chinese groups of cardiovascular and related chronic diseases in China, providing Chinese groups of scientific evidence to promote the popularization of healthy lifestyles and the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
