    Earthworms are a popular animal for gardeners and farmers because this wriggly invertebrate recycles nutrients from the soil, making them more readily available to plants


    Soils are becoming increasingly contaminated with plastic debris, especially microplastics less than 5mm wide, that are shed from larger plastic waste or released directly from products as small particles


    By placing earthworms in containers filled with different types of plastics at specific locations in the soil, the researchers found that the earthworms preferred either biobased polylactic acid (PLA) pellets or petroleum-derived polyethylene terephthalate (PET) Particulate soil, but actively steer clear of some semi-synthetic plastics
